Playa del Carmen, Mexico — A serious traffic accident on Saturday morning led to the arrest of a driver who attempted to flee the scene and later claimed to have connections to a high-ranking police official.
Incident Details
The collision occurred around 9:30 a.m. at the intersection of Avenida 75 and Constituyentes, where a blue Ford struck a Chevrolet Beat with license plates USH-452-W. After the impact, the Ford driver accelerated and abandoned the scene.
Municipal Police officers intercepted the suspect a few blocks away. Upon detention, the individual—who identified himself as a supervisor for a private security company—adopted a confrontational stance, allegedly threatening officers by stating he worked under Commander Santana Poot, the operational director of Quintana Roo’s Secretariat of Citizen Security (SCC). He warned officers they would “face consequences” if they did not release him.
Legal Proceedings
Despite his attempts to leverage alleged connections, authorities followed protocol. The vehicle was impounded, and the driver underwent mandatory medical evaluation. The case has been referred to the State Attorney General’s Office (FGE), where he may face charges for property damage and other applicable offenses.
The incident underscores ongoing scrutiny over abuse of influence in law enforcement interactions.
