Tulum, Quintana Roo — A young delivery driver for a dessert shop reported being a victim of police abuse on Thursday night after being intercepted by Municipal Police officers on Kukulkán Avenue, near the entrance to Aldea Zama, while he was on his way to make a delivery in the coastal zone.
According to the victim's testimony, around 8:00 p.m., one of the officers allegedly pulled the delivery bag he was carrying, causing him to lose control and fall from his motorcycle. Following the incident, the young man claims he was subdued, gagged with his own sweater, handcuffed, and beaten in different parts of his body. He also stated that the officers searched his belongings and stole personal items from him.
In a video circulated on social media by the delivery driver's sister, visible injuries can be seen on his face, abdomen, knees, and hands, evidencing the violence with which the police allegedly acted. The publication generated outrage among Tulum residents, who demanded an immediate investigation for abuse of authority.
The young man recounted that at no point was he explained the reason for his detention or the cause for the search. He added that his motorcycle—an indispensable tool for his work—was also damaged during the operation.
According to his testimony, he managed to escape the location despite the assaults and went to the establishment where he works. There, his family verified his physical condition and went to the checkpoint to demand an explanation from the officers involved.
Municipal authorities have not yet issued an official statement on the case. However, the public complaint has once again placed police practices at the checkpoints on Kukulkán Avenue under scrutiny, where residents, delivery drivers, and workers have reported alleged abuses, extortion, and arbitrary detentions.
Civil society organizations have warned that this type of episode violates human rights and citizen trust in a municipality where institutional violence adds to the general concern for public safety.
