Cancun, Quintana Roo — The discovery of a decomposed body in a vegetated area of Cancun’s Colonia Mexico neighborhood prompted a multi-agency security operation Tuesday.
Members of the Missing Persons Search Unit made the find while conducting field searches related to active missing persons cases near the highway exit to Merida. As they moved through the brush, the team located human remains in an advanced state of decomposition and immediately notified ministerial authorities.
Investigators and forensic experts from the Quintana Roo State Prosecutor’s Office (FGEQROO) arrived at the scene to begin processing evidence. State police cordoned off the perimeter while specialists collected clues and documented the scene.
Sources close to the investigation said the condition of the body prevented a preliminary identification at the site. It was also not immediately possible to determine whether the victim had injuries or signs of violence, so results of forensic tests and studies are pending.
Unofficially, authorities are analyzing the possibility that the remains belong to a taxi driver reported missing weeks earlier in the same area. The case gained relevance after the vehicle he was driving was found abandoned with another deceased person inside.
However, the Prosecutor’s Office has not officially confirmed the identity of the victim found Tuesday. Officials said genetic analysis and other examinations by the Forensic Medical Service will be key to establishing who the person was.
After the scene processing was completed, the body, which remains unidentified, was transferred to the Forensic Medical Service facilities for further identification procedures. The investigation remains open, with authorities pursuing multiple lines of inquiry to clarify the circumstances of the death.
