Cozumel Hosts Rare Masonic Congress This Weekend

Cozumel, Mexico — Cozumel will serve as the host this weekend for the XVIII National Masonic Philosophical Congress. The event is expected to draw approximately 300 lodge members of the Scottish Rite, with representatives from 24 states, and close to one thousand people in total when including accompanying guests, as announced this morning in a press conference.

Daniel Arana Pulido, Sovereign Grand Commander of the Supreme Council of the 33rd Degree Masonry, explained that this gathering, unique in Quintana Roo and unlikely to be repeated for another 24 years, is a forum where Masons from other states will present their philosophical studies on various topics. These studies are related to the betterment of human beings and their development, considering moral and civic precepts.

A Significant Tourism and Economic Impact

Beyond its philosophical relevance, the event is projected to have a strong tourism and economic impact on the island. The massive arrival of people for a single multi-day event will generate significant economic spillover, given that only 300 lodge members are officially accounted for, with the remainder being their accompanying guests, averaging three per Mason. This is expected to boost convention tourism.

The congress will take place this weekend on October 3, 4, and 5 at the Convention Center. Access will be free to the public solely for the inauguration ceremony, while the remainder of the meetings will be private. The objective of these private sessions is for attending Masons to present their own studies, some of whom are specialized in philosophical topics.

Regarding travel, Daniel Arana Pulido stated that some attendees have already arrived on the island through air connections, which he said filled flights from Mexico City, with the remainder arriving via the federal maritime route.

Concerning the studies presented and their potential dissemination to the public, plans are being considered for informational events convened by members. These events would aim to share the conclusions of the studies and how to apply them through open forums for the general population, featuring comprehensible topics.
