The Cozumel Parks and Museums Foundation (FPMC) has announced its involvement in the organizing committee for the 16th Cozumel Island Bird Festival. The festival, which is set to run from October 17th to 20th, will include birdwatching trips at various tourist sites managed by the FPMC. The foundation's participation underscores its dedication to environmental conservation and community engagement.
The festival is part of the New Agreement for the Welfare and Development of Quintana Roo, an initiative endorsed by Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa. The agreement encourages collaborative efforts to protect natural resources and promote community involvement in biodiversity conservation through citizen science. Alejandro Marchán Payán, the general director of the FPMC, emphasized the foundation's commitment to these goals.
The FPMC, along with other event coordinators, aims to foster a culture of birdwatching and bird tourism. The festival is seen as an opportunity to promote harmony between humans and nature, encouraging community participation in the protection of the island's endemic, resident, and migratory bird populations.
This year, festival attendees will have the opportunity to explore and document bird life in a variety of ecosystems. The FPMC will open the doors to the Punta Sur Ecotouristic Park, the Urban Heart Park, and the Tourist Stopover of the Archaeological Zone of San Gervasio. These locations offer diverse habitats, including wetlands, coasts, jungles, and urban areas.
The festival will pay special tribute to the Cozumel Island Wren (Troglodytes beani), an endemic species, and will highlight the importance of insects in the bird ecosystem. These initiatives further solidify Cozumel's status as the first "Bird City" in Latin America, a title it received in 2022.
Alejandro Marchán invites the entire community to participate in the festival, which will feature accessible and inclusive events. This includes the third national meeting of the Amazilias Bird Watchers Network. The FPMC's involvement in the festival is part of its ongoing efforts to engage the community in conservation actions and foster a collective commitment to protecting the island's biodiversity.
