The Foundation of Parks and Museums of Cozumel (FPMC) recently hosted the 16th annual Cozumel Island Bird Festival. This event is part of the foundation's ongoing commitment to wildlife conservation, and provides a platform for bird monitoring and observation.
Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa has also been instrumental in promoting bird protection initiatives through the New Pact for the Welfare and Development of Quintana Roo. This pact encourages community participation in conservation efforts.
Jesus Benavides Andrade, the director of the Ecotourism Park Punta Sur, spoke at the festival's closing ceremony. He emphasized that the festival:
- Raises awareness about the importance of conserving birds and their habitats.
- Establishes Cozumel as a premier destination for bird-watching tourism, both nationally and internationally.
- Fosters a culture of conservation within the community, recognizing Cozumel as Latin America's first "Bird City."
The hope is that these initiatives will inspire more people to join the effort to protect the island's biodiversity.
