Cozumel Advances Sustainable Green Waste Management Project at Banco Campeche

Cozumel, Quintana Roo — Authorities on the island of Cozumel are advancing a project to transform the Banco Campeche green waste disposal site into a composting facility, promoting a sustainable environmental management model.

Russel Cohuo Uitz, deputy director of Parks, Gardens, and Tourist Zones, explained that clearing and conditioning work is underway at the site, which is designated for final disposal of green waste. The goal is to turn what was once a problem into an environmental opportunity, moving toward a more sustainable model for handling organic waste.

He noted that operations have accelerated with a recently acquired backhoe, operated by personnel from his department. This equipment has helped remove accumulated material to organize the area and prepare the ground for the next phase: installing a compost production system.

The project aims to give sustainable management to green waste generated on the island, converting it into useful inputs for improving public spaces and green areas. The idea is to transform branches, leaves, and plant debris into compost to nourish parks and gardens, closing a cycle of utilization that directly benefits the community.

The initiative is part of the need to convert waste into resources. Under this approach, Banco Campeche will cease to be just a disposal site and become a center for ecological transformation.

The expected impact is twofold, Cohuo Uitz explained. On one hand, it reduces the accumulation of green waste that often clogs public spaces; on the other, it generates a useful product for maintaining community areas. The project also aligns with environmental policies seeking to modernize waste management processes and strengthen Cozumel’s image as a destination committed to sustainability.

The intention is to maintain special care for the environment, and with the modernization of public services, this project is shaping up as the sustainable way to transform a daily problem into a long-term solution.
