160 Trees Axed in Playa del Carmen’s Divisive Avenue Remodel

Playa del Carmen, Mexico — A noticeably small group of activists protested Monday morning on the median of Avenida 10 Norte, demanding the immediate cancellation of a project led by Estefanía Mercado that plans to remove 160 trees along the avenue. The stretch in question, which features a central median, runs from Avenida Constituyentes to Avenida Pintores. One protester symbolically “chained” themselves to a tree to express opposition to the project.

Unnecessary Remodeling Sparks Outrage

The controversial remodeling of Avenida 10, primarily between Constituyentes and CTM, has angered environmentalists, residents, and business owners after it was revealed that many of the trees—some over 30 years old—will be cut down or “relocated” to make way for the project. The initiative is being pushed by municipal president Estefanía Mercado and executed by her close associate, Arturo Regalado Hedricks, from the Secretariat of Public Works.

Far from being a priority urban improvement, critics have labeled the project a “costly whim” with an underlying motive of inflated contracts and simulated public works, a pattern seen in other contracts under this administration, which have been plagued by shell companies and substandard materials.

Activists and Business Owners Voice Concerns

Protesters argued that the city should prioritize other areas of Playa del Carmen plagued by potholes, flooded streets, lack of sidewalks, and poor lighting. Additionally, local merchants warned that the project would bring more harm than benefits, including temporary closures, reduced customer traffic, and potential bankruptcy for small businesses. The timing of the remodeling—during a fragile summer vacation season already impacted by massive sargassum influxes—has further exacerbated concerns.

Municipal Government Denies Tree Removal Claims

In a statement released Monday afternoon, Municipal President Estefanía Mercado categorically denied any intention to remove or relocate trees as part of the urban improvement project.

“Avenida 10 will have more trees, not fewer. Do not fall for fake news. This administration respects the environment and acts responsibly. We are committed to an urban transformation that protects our surroundings, strengthens the social fabric, and improves quality of life for all,” Mercado stated.

According to the government, the remodeling project includes not only maintenance and improvements to pedestrian and road infrastructure but also a significant increase in the number of trees, with species suited to the region’s climate and soil. This, officials claim, will provide more shade, enhance the urban landscape, and deliver sustainable environmental benefits.

Lingering Doubts Over Project’s Necessity

Despite the government’s assurances, skepticism remains. Critics question the urgency of the project during peak tourist season and point to past instances where environmental impact studies were bypassed, leading to more harm than good. The administration’s repeated use of the phrase “everyone included” has done little to quell doubts about the true motivations behind the initiative.

The controversy continues as residents and activists demand greater transparency and accountability in urban development projects.
