Cozumel, Mexico — With two simultaneous protests scheduled in Cozumel—one in support and another opposing the construction of a fourth cruise ship dock—local officials have raised concerns about potential confrontations that could harm the island’s tourism reputation.
Calls for Civility Amid Rising Tensions
Pedro Joaquín Delbouis, a local councilman and former mayor, urged caution and mutual respect in a statement issued via social media.
"Organizing demonstrations for or against the fourth cruise dock must be done responsibly, with civility and respect," Joaquín Delbouis said. "Both sides have valid arguments, and no one here has the right to impose their will on others."
While affirming the right to protest, he warned that holding opposing rallies at the same time and location could escalate tensions.
"Everyone has the right to demonstrate in this country, but we must also act prudently. Scheduling conflicting protests simultaneously is reckless and could lead to dangerous situations," he added.
Joaquín Delbouis emphasized that any violent clashes would damage Cozumel’s reputation in national and international media. "No one wants that," he stated.
Competing Perspectives on the Dock Project
The protests are set for 6:00 p.m. Local residents, environmental groups, and activists oppose the new dock, citing irreversible ecological damage. Meanwhile, Moisés Josué Méndez Balam, secretary general of the local CTM labor union, has organized a march in favor of the project, arguing it will boost the economy through jobs and increased cruise tourism.
"Every development has an environmental impact, but we must weigh the benefits," Méndez Balam said. "The dock will create jobs and economic growth, though we must also address legitimate environmental concerns."
A Plea for Dialogue Over Division
Joaquín Delbouis’s appeal seeks to prevent divisions from escalating into violence, urging respectful dialogue instead.
"Once again: responsibility, civility, and respect among all," he concluded.
