Cold Front 30 Hits Yucatán with Arctic Air Mass

Map showing Cold Front 30 affecting Yucatán in January and February

Yucatán, Mexico — The State Government, through the State Coordination of Civil Protection (Procivy), reports that starting Monday, January 26, a drop in minimum temperatures will be recorded in all regions of Yucatán due to the displacement of cold front number 30 over the Peninsula.

The head of the agency, Hernán Hernández Rodríguez, detailed that the associated Arctic air mass will favor the thermal drop, with minimum temperatures typically occurring between 03:00 and 06:00 hours.

According to the forecast, during the dawn of Wednesday, January 28, minimum temperatures of 11 to 13°C are expected in southern municipalities such as Tekax, Peto, Tzucacab, Oxkutzcab, Santa Elena, and Muna. In eastern municipalities, such as Valladolid; in the central region, such as Izamal and surrounding areas; and in the northwest, such as Mérida and surroundings, values will range between 13 and 15°C, while in the coastal zone minimums of 18 to 20°C are forecast.

Procivy indicated that for Thursday, January 29, a slight thermal recovery is expected, with minimums of 14 to 16°C in municipalities of the center (Izamal), northeast (Tizimín), and northwest (Mérida). In the south they will remain between 15 and 17°C, while on the coast they will continue between 18 and 20°C.

However, starting Friday, January 30, this Arctic air mass could strengthen, leading to a new drop, with minimum temperatures of 9 to 11°C in municipalities of the southwest and south such as Tekax, Peto, Tzucacab, Chankom, Chikindzonot, Kaua, and Cuncunul, as well as in municipalities of the northwest such as Halachó, Maxcanú, Kopomá, Chocholá, Kinchil, and Abalá, in addition to the west and south of Mérida. For the center and northeast, values of 12 to 14°C are forecast, and on the coast minimums of 15 to 17°C.

Finally, Procivy indicated that medium- and long-term forecasts contemplate the possible arrival of a new cold front toward the last day of January or in the first days of February, which could prolong the very cold environment during the first week of February.

The agency recommends that the population take precautions, especially during the early morning and first hours of the day, and stay attentive to information issued through official channels.
