President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo announced the launch of the “Miel del Bienestar” (Wellness Honey) initiative on Saturday, a program aimed at supporting local beekeepers by guaranteeing fair prices for their products. The announcement was made during the groundbreaking ceremony for the Tren Maya freight transport project, one of the current administration’s flagship infrastructure developments.
Supporting Local Producers
Sheinbaum explained that the honey will be purchased directly from Yucatán producers at a fair price and distributed nationwide through the government-run “Tiendas del Bienestar” (Wellness Stores). The initiative is part of a broader fair trade strategy designed to strengthen regional economies by eliminating intermediaries.
“We are going to support all honey producers in Yucatán. They will receive a fair price for their product, and it will be sold across the country,” Sheinbaum stated.
Expanding the “Bienestar” Model
The president noted that similar programs are being implemented in other regions of Mexico, each tailored to local products. In Tabasco, cacao is being purchased directly from farmers for the upcoming “Chocolates del Bienestar” (Wellness Chocolates). In the Sierra de Puebla, the “Café del Bienestar” (Wellness Coffee) initiative is underway, while states like Zacatecas, Durango, and Nayarit will see the introduction of “Frijol del Bienestar” (Wellness Beans).
Sheinbaum emphasized that these policies not only benefit producers but also compel private buyers to adjust their pricing, improving conditions across the supply chain. “If the government pays a fair price, private buyers will have to do the same,” she said.
A Vision for Regional Development
The “Miel del Bienestar” initiative aligns with the administration’s broader goals of regional development, food self-sufficiency, and strengthening domestic markets. The program reflects the government’s commitment to social justice and equitable economic growth.
The announcement underscores the administration’s focus on supporting small-scale producers while ensuring fair pricing and distribution mechanisms nationwide.
