Tulum Expands Sea Turtle Protection with 80km Monitored Beaches

Tulum, Mexico — In an effort to safeguard sea turtles during their nesting season, the Municipal Committee for the Protection and Conservation of Sea Turtles was officially sworn in this Wednesday. The committee, composed of six programs and groups from various sectors, will oversee a total of 80 kilometers of beaches across the municipality.

A Collaborative Effort for Conservation

During the ceremonial session, representatives from civil associations, public agencies, hotel and restaurant businesses, and volunteer citizens outlined the areas under their supervision and shared results from previous nesting seasons.

Rocío Peralta, head of the municipal Directorate of Sustainability, emphasized that the committee’s primary goal is to promote environmental awareness and promptly address any issues that arise during the nesting period. She also confirmed that the first nests of the season have already been recorded on some of Tulum’s beaches.

Unified Commitment to Preservation

Committee members unanimously stressed the need for coordinated efforts and constant communication to ensure a successful nesting season. They also highlighted the importance of compliance by hotels, beach clubs, and restaurants with necessary guidelines to facilitate the turtles’ nesting process.

As a symbolic gesture of commitment, each committee member raised their hand in a pledge, acknowledging the responsibility of protecting these endangered marine species year after year.

The formation of the committee underscores Tulum’s dedication to environmental conservation and reinforces the municipality’s strategy for biodiversity protection in a region where tourism and sustainability must coexist.
