Mexico City — Chinese automaker GAC Motor announced it will open its first assembly plant in Mexico, with operations scheduled to begin in the second half of 2026. The company did not disclose the plant’s location or investment amount.
In a statement, GAC Motor explained the facility will initially operate under a flexible assembly scheme, allowing it to adapt to various technologies including internal combustion engines, hybrids, plug-in hybrids, and electric vehicles.
This approach will enable the plant to assemble sedans, SUVs, pickups, and crossovers, strengthening the company’s model portfolio that includes the EMZOOM, AION UT, and the upcoming GS7 launch.
The new plant is part of GAC’s global One GAC 2.0 strategy, focused on international expansion through sustainable growth, local development, and closer consumer engagement.
“This strategic decision reflects the brand’s confidence in Mexico’s potential, the strength of its automotive industry, and its manufacturing capabilities, which are globally recognized for high quality standards and competitiveness,” the company stated. “In a constantly transforming global environment, GAC Mexico moves forward with a long-term vision.”
The investment decision comes amid an international environment marked by new tariffs and shifting global trade dynamics, but primarily aims to strengthen GAC’s local presence and establish more efficient, competitive operations in Mexico.
GAC Motor entered the Mexican market in November 2023 and currently operates approximately 55 dealerships with a parts warehouse in the State of Mexico.
The company plans to reveal inauguration details, investment amount, and production capacity in June, with CEO in Mexico Rafe Huang and GAC Group President Feng Xingya expected to attend the announcement.
