Chetumal, Mexico — The State Transit Directorate has announced the initiation of various administrative procedures for the temporary suspension and, in some cases, the definitive revocation of driver's licenses, primarily for public service drivers, most of whom are taxi drivers in the city of Chetumal. These drivers have been involved in traffic accidents caused by alcohol consumption or in incidents related to criminal activities.

The head of the agency, Efraín García Chávez, explained that these actions are part of a comprehensive plan for the purification and strengthening of road safety, whose objective is to guarantee that public transport operators comply with regulations and drive responsibly.

"We have constant reports of public service units involved in incidents stemming from alcohol consumption or due to inappropriate behavior by the drivers," stated the official. "We cannot allow those who put the lives of users and other drivers at risk to continue circulating."

Efraín García Chávez detailed that the procedures for license suspension are carried out following an administrative investigation in which police reports, the results of toxicological tests, and the background of each driver are reviewed. In cases of recidivism or participation in crimes, the penalty can lead to the definitive cancellation of the license.

Likewise, he indicated that work is being done in coordination with the State Attorney General's Office and the Quintana Roo Institute of Mobility to detect and sanction drivers who operate under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or who have been involved in illicit acts, such as robbery, harassment, or causing harm to third parties.

The official recalled that, in recent months, several incidents have been recorded in Chetumal in which taxi drivers were implicated while in a state of drunkenness, which has generated concern among the citizenry. Therefore, he advanced that the Transit Directorate will reinforce breathalyzer operations and vehicle supervision, especially during weekends and in high-traffic areas.

"We want to recover the confidence of users and ensure that public transport is a safe and dignified service. A driver's license is a privilege, not an absolute right, and it can be withdrawn when the lives of people are put at risk," he emphasized.

Efraín García Chávez urged concession holders and transport union leaders to collaborate with the authorities to identify irresponsible drivers and strengthen internal control mechanisms within their organizations.
