CFE Denies Infrastructure Failure After Chiquilá Blackout, Blames Private Transformer

A CFE electrical transformer in Chiquilá, Quintana Roo, where a blackout occurred on May 22, 2026.

Chiquilá, Quintana Roo — The Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) said the temporary power outage that hit the community of Chiquilá in the early hours of May 22 was caused by a damaged private transformer, not by failures in the state-owned company’s infrastructure, contrary to rumors circulating among residents.

In an official statement, the CFE said that after receiving the report of the fault, technical staff immediately conducted an inspection and addressed the situation. Once the problem was identified, the company restored power to affected users, disconnecting only the supply directly linked to the faulty private transformer.

The CFE said it will only reconnect that portion of the service once the owners repair the equipment.

“It is false that the cause of this interruption was in CFE’s infrastructure,” the company said in its statement, amid persistent complaints from citizens about blackouts, voltage fluctuations, and failures in various regions of southeastern Mexico.

The CFE added that it continuously monitors its control systems to ensure uninterrupted power supply and respond to any incidents.

The outage comes during a period of high temperatures and strong energy demand in Quintana Roo and the Yucatan Peninsula, where reports of power cuts and electrical problems have multiplied in recent weeks across several communities.
