Experience the Spectacular 2024 Day of the Dead Parade in Cancún!

As the Day of the Dead approaches, residents of Quintana Roo are eagerly planning ways to honor the return of their loved ones from Mictlán, even if just for a day. To facilitate this, the Quintana Roo Ministry of Social Development invites all Cancún families and state residents to join the second Janal Pixan parade. The event is scheduled for Saturday, October 26, starting at 3:30 p.m.

The parade will kick off from FARO Quintana Roo and conclude at Parque La Paz. Here, a range of activities will be organized to ensure a fun and memorable time for families, friends, and loved ones.

THE JANAL PIXAN DAY OF THE DEAD PARADE IS HERE TO STAY

Following the resounding success of the inaugural Day of the Dead parade, Janal Pixan, in Quintana Roo, a second edition was inevitable. This year, the event is set to attract not only locals from Cancún and the state but also tourists from across the country and beyond.

To cater to this diverse audience, the parade organizers have planned a fair after the parade, storytelling sessions, and various workshops that will be open to all attendees.

THE SIGNIFICANCE OF DAY OF THE DEAD PARADES

Day of the Dead parades are an integral part of the traditions that enrich the celebrations in Mexico. They symbolize the reconnection between the deceased returning from Mictlán and the Mexican identity, which embraces death rather than fearing it, unlike other cultures worldwide.

It's important to note that the Day of the Dead celebration has its roots in the indigenous cultures of Mexico, who believed that life on earth was merely a preparation for the afterlife. Following the Spanish conquest, these celebrations were merged with Catholicism, leading to the establishment of All Saints' Day on November 1 and All Souls' Day on November 2.

UNESCO highlights that the annual reunion between the indigenous people and their ancestors during the Day of the Dead serves to reaffirm an individual's role within society.
