Cancun, Mexico — A cartoonist was shot and killed in Cancun while resting under a tree, apparently due to a case of mistaken identity involving another person; his dog remained by his side until authorities arrived.
The violent incident shook the Mexico neighborhood in Cancun's Region 244. According to witnesses, the victim was talking with a friend, with whom he spent nearly every afternoon, when the friend left for a few moments to buy food.
Minutes later, two men on a motorcycle arrived at the location and fired at least twelve shots at the man, who died immediately.
Neighbors who heard the gunshots alerted the 911 emergency number. Upon arrival, paramedics confirmed the victim no longer showed any vital signs, so they covered the body with a sheet.
The area was secured by elements of the Municipal Police, while personnel from the Services Periciales of the State Attorney General's Office handled the removal of the body.
According to accounts from those close to him, it is presumed the attack occurred due to a confusion; the assailants were looking for another person and are believed to have mistaken the cartoonist for their intended target.
The victim, whose identity remains unknown, was a regular at that location, where he spent afternoons accompanied by his friend and his dog. The animal remained beside the man's body, protecting him while authorities carried out their procedures.
