Cancún, Quintana Roo — The National Chamber of the Restaurant and Seasoned Food Industry (Canirac) in Cancún has begun the process of establishing a representation in Tulum, aiming to strengthen the gastronomic sector despite a wave of restaurant closures and job losses in the destination.
Canirac Cancún President Perla Flores said meetings with local restaurateurs are already underway to form the representation, a project that is part of the Renace Tulum plan to boost dining activity and promote the destination.
Flores explained that the first goal is to sign up at least 50 restaurants, a requirement set by the chamber’s statutes to formally constitute a representation and later consolidate it as a national delegation, similar to the one currently operating in Puerto Morelos.
The chamber leader acknowledged that the sector continues to face a decline in diner traffic, rising operating costs, and a roughly 20% drop in jobs during 2026. However, she noted that Tulum’s culinary recognition, including accolades from the Michelin Guide, represents an opportunity to accelerate economic recovery.
