Cancún Launches Special Sea Turtle Nesting Protection Operation

Specialized personnel and hotel volunteers supervise sea turtle nesting corrals on a Cancún beach.

Cancún, Quintana Roo — Municipal authorities and the hotel sector have ramped up protection measures along Cancún’s beaches as the sea turtle nesting season begins, aiming to safeguard nests and boost hatchling survival rates.

The Benito Juárez City Council announced that the conservation program seeks to match or exceed 2025 results, when more than 1.1 million turtles of various species were released.

Fernando Haro Salinas, director of the Municipal Ecology Department, highlighted that coordination between government, businesses, and citizens has made this effort one of the most important in Quintana Roo.

More than 50 hotels are currently participating by installing protective corrals on their beachfronts and assigning staff for surveillance, nest protection, and hatchling releases.

For the 2026 season, authorities plan to maintain between 50 and 52 corrals distributed along Cancún’s coastline. This infrastructure will allow constant monitoring and better conditions for species such as the white turtle (green turtle), loggerhead, and hawksbill.

Officials emphasized that public participation will be key to conserving these sea turtles amid tourism activity and other environmental risks.
