Cancun Public Transit to Cross Nichupté Bridge With New Routes

Cancun, Quintana Roo — Cancun is preparing to launch two public bus routes that will use the new Nichupté Bridge, aiming to provide faster and more efficient service to the hotel zone, according to state mobility officials.

Rafael Hernández, director of the Quintana Roo Mobility Institute (Imoveqroo), announced that formal operations will begin in about three months, with test runs starting in late May using low-floor buses designed for easier access by people with disabilities, older adults, and all passengers. The buses will mark a shift toward improved service quality, with enhanced safety and comfort features.

The routes will primarily run along Avenidas Kabah and Cancún, connecting directly to the hotel zone via the new bridge. In the first phase, 18 to 20 buses will operate, each with distinctive colors so riders can easily identify their route.

A key feature: buses will not stop on the Nichupté Bridge itself, significantly reducing travel time between the two sides of the city.

Service will initially run from 4:30 a.m. to 1:00 a.m., with the possibility of expanding to 24-hour service as demand grows, particularly for tourism and night-shift workers.

Hernández said the fare is still under analysis and will depend on distance and demand during the trial period. However, he confirmed plans for a digital payment system that would include free transfers and discounted rates for students, older adults, and people with disabilities.
