Cancún, Quintana Roo — Civil Protection officials in Benito Juárez have activated a cyclone preparedness plan that includes 108 temporary shelters and ongoing drainage maintenance as forecasters monitor two low-pressure systems and Tropical Depression Cristóbal over the Atlantic Ocean.
One of the low-pressure systems has an 80% chance of cyclonic development in the near term, according to authorities. Antonio Riveroll Ribbón, director of Benito Juárez Civil Protection, said the priority is preparing urban infrastructure and emergency logistics in case either system shifts course or strengthens.
Shelters and capacity
The municipality has 108 shelters ready to house more than 42,000 people. The hotel sector has also provided 15 self-shelters for tourists, and one emergency shelter is reserved exclusively for pets.
Preventive drainage work
Crews have intensified cleaning of sewers, storm drains and wells in neighborhoods prone to flooding. Riveroll urged residents to keep calm, review their family emergency plans, and avoid spreading rumors on social media, directing the public to official bulletins from the city and Civil Protection.
