Cancún, Quintana Roo — On Sunday mornings, the roar of traffic on Bonampak Avenue gives way to the sound of roller skates and children’s laughter as the city’s weekly “Paseo Cancunense” transforms a major thoroughfare into a pedestrian-friendly corridor.
The event, held April 26, closed the avenue to vehicles from the Bonampak intersection to the Malecón Tajamar, allowing residents to walk, cycle, skate, and walk their pets in a safe, car-free environment. Local authorities described the initiative as part of a broader effort to reclaim public space and promote active mobility.
Along the route, municipal agencies set up information booths where citizens could learn about urban development projects and community services. The event also featured a market of local entrepreneurs selling natural juices, healthy snacks, crafts, and independent design products.
“This is not an isolated event but a tradition that seeks to transform the relationship of residents with their surroundings,” officials said in a statement. The goal is to demonstrate that road infrastructure can serve as a safe meeting point for physical and emotional well-being, at least for a few hours each week.
The Paseo Cancunense is organized by the Municipal Institute of Urban Development Planning (IMPLAN). Residents can check the full calendar of activities at the city’s official portal.
By late afternoon, Bonampak Avenue reopened to traffic, but organizers said the energy of hundreds of participants served as a reminder that when spaces are opened to the community, the community responds with life.
