Cancún’s Road Safety Boost with Modernized Traffic Signals

Modernized traffic signal and safe crossing infrastructure in Cancún

Cancún, Mexico — In an effort to guarantee safer, more orderly, and efficient mobility, the Benito Juárez Municipal Government, under the direction of Municipal President Ana Paty Peralta, is advancing the modernization of the Traffic Signal Network through the implementation of the Safe Crossings project. This strategic initiative primarily aims to protect the integrity of pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists who travel daily in the city.

Currently, 12 Safe Crossings are under construction, work that began at the end of 2025 as part of a comprehensive public policy for road safety. These intersections are designed with high-security and operational technical criteria, including both vehicular and pedestrian traffic signals, and horizontal and vertical signage. Furthermore, geometric adjustments are being made to facilitate safer coexistence among all users of public roads.

It is relevant to note that, during this stage, some of these crossings are operating under a familiarization protocol, in which the traffic signals show a flashing red light on main roads and yellow on secondary ones. This procedure, recognized internationally, allows drivers and pedestrians to gradually adapt to the new infrastructure, while essential technical processes are carried out for its synchronization with the Control and Monitoring Center, ensuring its optimal performance once the works are completed, scheduled for March 2026.

These actions respond to an unavoidable reality: the accelerated growth of Cancún. Between 2010 and 2023, the city’s population increased from approximately 600,000 to nearly one million inhabitants, representing a 66% increase. In parallel, the vehicle fleet grew by 124% in just over a decade, doubling the number of cars circulating daily. This situation has demanded the modernization of urban infrastructure and sustainable mobility solutions.

Currently, the Municipal Government manages a network of 175 signalized intersections, which receive preventive and corrective maintenance throughout the year, guaranteeing their reliable operation within a comprehensive safe mobility strategy.

The results are already evident: Cancún has 16 fully operational Safe Crossings, implemented between 2023 and 2024 at points of high traffic flow. These efforts have managed to reduce traffic accidents by up to 60% in these areas, confirming that investment in safe infrastructure not only saves lives but also improves the quality of life for citizens.

The Benito Juárez Municipal Government reiterates that, despite the temporary inconveniences caused by the ongoing works, their benefits are permanent. Work continues on building a city where road safety is not an exception, but a guaranteed right for all.
