Cancún, Mexico — The Mexican Caribbean is preparing for days of high activity along its coastlines with the arrival of the first long weekend of 2026, during which a notable increase in visitor presence on its beaches is anticipated, estimated at up to 40% more than usual, leading Civil Protection to enhance security in the area.
Tourist movement is expected to begin this Thursday, January 29, when local families and tourists will take advantage of the “bridge” holiday due to Friday’s Technical Council and Monday, February 2, being a non-working day for the anniversary of the Constitution.
“We always have our operations ramped up on weekends, but yes, during this bridge holiday we will certainly see more movement… We will request support from the Fire Department, they normally support us with lifeguards; we have 31 and they send us 4 to 6, and for this bridge holiday it will be reinforced with up to 10 lifeguards,” shared Antonio Riveroll, director of Civil Protection for the Benito Juárez municipality.
It is estimated that around 100,000 people will visit the beaches during these days, necessitating redoubled vigilance. The strategy includes the permanent activation of warning flags, rescue teams, and observation towers, with the goal of addressing any incidents immediately.
Authorities called on the population and visitors to respect the instructions of lifeguards and the color of the warning flags to enjoy a safe weekend in one of the country’s most popular beach destinations.
