Cancún, Mexico — The Municipal Secretariat of Citizen Security and Transit (SMSCyT) of Benito Juárez has launched an internal investigation following a police intervention in which an officer fired his service weapon at a civilian. The incident occurred on the night of Monday, July 14, in the Supermanzana 107 neighborhood of Paraíso Maya.
Internal and Criminal Investigations Underway
The Directorate of Internal Affairs has opened case file SMSCyT/DAI/197/07/2025 to determine accountability in accordance with established protocols. Simultaneously, the case has been referred to the State Attorney General’s Office, which will conduct its own investigation to determine whether grounds exist for criminal prosecution.
According to the official report, the incident unfolded when an individual, allegedly agitated, appeared to reach for what was suspected to be a firearm during an argument with the officer. Faced with an imminent threat to the safety of officers and bystanders, the officer discharged his weapon in an effort to neutralize the situation and prevent a potential assault.
The civilian sustained injuries to his lower extremities and was transported under police custody to a hospital for medical treatment. During the operation, a group of individuals attempted to interfere with the arrest, leading to heightened tensions that were eventually controlled by security personnel.
Commitment to Transparency and Due Process
The Municipal Secretariat reaffirmed its commitment to legality, human rights protections, and public safety. It emphasized that such cases are investigated in strict adherence to the law to ensure transparency and respect for due process.
The incident remains under review as authorities work to clarify the circumstances surrounding the officer’s use of force. Further updates are expected as the investigations progress.
