Cancún, Quintana Roo — Cancún International Airport handled just 286 operations on Tuesday, its lowest daily total in two decades when excluding extraordinary periods such as the COVID-19 pandemic or hurricane shutdowns.
The figure is less than half of the more than 700 operations the airport has recorded on its busiest days, underscoring the slowdown now facing the leading tourism destination on Mexico’s Caribbean coast.
The current slump stands in sharp contrast with the airport’s record performance. On Dec. 17, 2022, Cancún International announced a new high of 719 scheduled operations in a single day, the vast majority of them international flights.
The decline is not limited to flight numbers. Between January and August, the airport moved 5.7% fewer passengers than in the same period a year earlier, a drop equivalent to roughly 1.2 million travelers.
The steepest losses are concentrated in the international market. In August alone, international traffic fell 15% as the airport handled just over 2.1 million passengers.
The data point to a downturn reflected in both the number of operations and passenger flows — two of the main indicators of tourism activity in Cancún.
