Cancún, Mexico — Cancún could make cultural history by hosting Mexico’s first international choir competition and festival, an event that would boost the city’s cultural and tourism profile.

The initiative is being pushed by Interkulture, an international organization founded in 1988 that aims to build bonds between countries through choral art. Interkulture currently includes over 120,000 choirs and more than two million singers worldwide.

Cancún’s Municipal Choir Company ranks among the top choirs in Interkulture’s international rankings, opening the door for the city to host an event traditionally held only in Europe, the United States, or Canada.

“This recognition places us in a very important international scenario and allows us to think big,” said Noé Garrido, director of Cancún’s Municipal Choir Company. “We are working for Cancún to host this competition and festival in the near future, ideally next year.”

The event would draw thousands of choral singers from different countries, representing not only a cultural milestone for the city but also a positive impact on tourism and international projection.

“It would be the first time in history that a competition of this nature takes place in Mexico, and particularly in our municipality,” Garrido emphasized.

He noted this achievement is especially significant since the Municipal Choir Company is a young project. “We are a young municipality and a choir that will turn just three years old in August, and yet we already have 10 international awards,” Garrido said. “Our next commitment will be in Sweden, which speaks to the level we have reached in a very short time.”

Garrido explained that the project’s vision extends beyond awards. “The idea is for the Municipal Children’s Choir Company to be the first of many similar projects that allow the multiplication and strengthening of choral art.”

The Municipal Choir Company will represent Cancún at the XLV World Choir Games 2026, one of the most important choral gatherings worldwide.
