Join Cancún’s Day of the Dead Altar Contest

Cancún, Mexico — To mark the Day of the Dead celebrations, also known in the region as Janal Pixán, the Benito Juárez Municipality has announced a series of cultural activities in Cancún, highlighted by the traditional Altar Competition.

The call for entries, disseminated on the municipal government's digital platforms, includes the rules for participation, the prizes, and all details for those who wish to be part of this edition dedicated to keeping one of Mexico's most representative traditions alive.

What Are the Rules for the 2025 Day of the Dead Altar Competition in Cancún?

Registration is taking place at the offices of the Institute of Culture and the Arts of the Benito Juárez municipality and is completely free. Registration will remain open until October 27 at 3:00 PM, after which the call for entries will close.

Requirements:
The requirement is that participants must present a proposed altar that represents a custom or tradition from any region, state, or town in the country. This proposal must be accompanied by a detailed monograph describing the origin of the symbolic elements of the selected region.

Elements:
The altars must include traditional elements such as food, sweets, beverages, toys, flowers, electric candles, among others, that reflect the essence of the selected region.

Presentation:
During the days of the event, each team must have one member who wears the typical costume of the selected region and acts as a narrator, explaining the meaning of each component of the altar to the jury and the public.

What Are the Prizes for the Day of the Dead Altar Competition in Cancún This 2025?

Prizes will be awarded to the participants who occupy the first five places in this Day of the Dead Altar Competition in Cancún this 2025, with cash prizes in the following amounts:

  • First place: $20,000 pesos
  • Second place: $15,000 pesos
  • Third place: $10,000 pesos
  • Fourth place: $1,500 pesos
  • Fifth place: $1,500 pesos
