Playa del Carmen, Mexico — The remodeling of Avenue 10 in Playa del Carmen could represent a step toward more integrated mobility by incorporating pedestrian spaces and bike lanes, according to Manuel Barrero, president of the College of Architects of the Riviera Maya.

Barrero emphasized that after the cancellation of the original project due to opposition from some social sectors—particularly concerns over the potential relocation of trees—any urban intervention must ensure the reintegration of greenery into the environment.

“There are major cities around the world where spectacular mobility projects have been implemented while still preserving vegetation. That’s what we should prioritize here,” Barrero stated.

Key Aspects of the Project

The primary objective of the intervention is to reduce the roadway from two lanes to one, allowing for wider sidewalks and the inclusion of a bike lane—infrastructure currently lacking in this stretch.

Barrero added that the College of Architects is prepared to collaborate with the municipal government, whether by presenting alternative proposals or providing technical feedback on the final project.

International Inspiration

During a recent trip to Madrid, Barrero observed an avenue where vehicular traffic was redirected underground, preserving trees at street level. He cited this as an example of viable solutions that balance urban development with environmental conservation.

The College of Architects has reiterated its willingness to support the city in ensuring the project aligns with sustainable urban planning principles.
