Cancún, Quintana Roo — A sweeping security operation conducted yesterday at the Cancún State Penitentiary (Cereso) uncovered a cache of prohibited items, including drugs, makeshift weapons, and even a sex toy. The joint operation, led by the State Secretariat of Citizen Security (SSC) in coordination with the National Guard, Mexican Navy, Army (Sedena), and the State Attorney General’s Office, aimed to reinforce discipline and control within the facility.
Findings Inside the Prison
Authorities conducted a thorough inspection of each prison module, seizing a wide array of contraband. Among the items confiscated were:
- 13 small bags of marijuana
- 8 packets of crystal meth
- 27 rolling papers for joints
- Nails, scissors, sharp objects, spoons, makeshift screwdrivers, and chargers
- One syringe
- A speaker, fan, micro SD card, necklace, and a sex toy
- Images and altars dedicated to Santa Muerte (Holy Death), a figure often associated with criminal groups
Officials emphasized that the operation was carried out without incidents or human rights violations, ensuring the physical and emotional integrity of inmates.

In an official release, authorities stated that such operations are part of a broader strategy to maintain security and governance within Quintana Roo’s penitentiary system. They confirmed that similar inspections will be conducted periodically to prevent the facility from spiraling out of control.
