Cozumel, Mexico — A man identified as "El Beny" was shot last night outside a taxi stand in Cozumel, leaving him severely wounded and hospitalized. The victim, known for his criminal history linked to drug trafficking, had previously survived a homicide attempt in January of this year.
Previous Attack and Criminal Ties
In the earlier incident, "El Beny" was found bound and bloodied inside a residence in the Emiliano Zapata neighborhood, a property allegedly used for drug-related activities. He had suffered machete wounds and was in critical condition but managed to escape and seek help, narrowly avoiding death. Authorities had previously seized the property due to drug-related offenses, highlighting the dangers of his criminal associations.
Despite these risks, the victim reportedly continued engaging in illegal activities, leading to the latest attack, where he sustained multiple gunshot wounds to various parts of his body.
Ongoing Investigation
Ministerial Police and forensic experts from the State Attorney General’s Office are investigating whether this incident is connected to the January homicide attempt. "El Beny" was also arrested in 2024 for allegedly belonging to a criminal cell involved in drug sales at Puerta Maya.
The wounded man was rushed to a hospital for emergency treatment, while the assailants remain at large.
