Recognizing the need to care for stray animals, Atenea Gómez, the municipal president of Isla Mujeres, has unveiled plans for the first Animal Welfare Center on the island.
The primary goal of the center is to rescue and provide shelter for pets that are either stray or have been mistreated. The center will offer a range of services, including adoption, vaccination, sterilization, deworming, and veterinary consultations.
Gómez has announced that construction of the island's first Animal Welfare Center will begin soon. She also confirmed plans to build a similar facility on the mainland. These centers aim to offer free services to residents throughout the municipality, benefiting their pets.
The new Animal Welfare Center will be a two-story building featuring a reception area, an adoption room, a medical area, cages, a grooming area, a garden, parking for staff, public parking, an administrative area, bathrooms, and stairs.
Gómez emphasized that the project will be carried out in collaboration with local citizens and environmentalists. Following the announcement, there will be meetings to discuss the project and gather feedback. Gómez also shared the email address of the Department of Environment and Ecology (email@quintanaroo.quadratin.com.mx), inviting island residents to send in any suggestions.
