Rescatan-Do’s Glow and Love Event Fights Pet Abandonment

Playa del Carmen, Mexico — The civil association Rescatan-Do has identified the transient population in Playa del Carmen as a leading cause of pet abandonment, as many individuals returning to their places of origin leave their dogs behind.

The announcement came during a press conference detailing a charity event marking the association’s second anniversary. Doheny Uruzquieta, the organization’s president, emphasized that a lack of cultural awareness regarding animal welfare contributes to the decision to abandon pets on the streets.

Event Details: “Glow and Love”

The event, titled Glow and Love, will take place on May 24 at the rooftop of Hotel Kavia, starting at 6:00 PM. Attendees can expect live music, merchandise sales, and adoption opportunities. Proceeds will support the rehabilitation and medical expenses of dogs with special needs.

Rising Abandonment Cases

“The number of abandoned and mistreated animals in Playa del Carmen—and the region as a whole—is staggering. We believe much of this is due to the transient population; many leave and rarely take their pets with them,” said Uruzquieta.

The association has observed the highest rates of abandonment and abuse in neighborhoods such as In House, Villas del Sol, Luis Donaldo Colosio, and Cristo Rey. Tick-borne diseases are among the most common health issues affecting rescued dogs in these areas.

Rescue Efforts and Adoption Protocols

Over the past two years, Rescatan-Do has conducted nearly 400 rescues using its own resources while also supporting sterilization campaigns by other organizations. Uruzquieta stressed the importance of stricter adoption protocols to ensure pets are placed in responsible homes.

“This is critically important. It’s not just about giving animals away to make people feel good—it’s about ensuring these dogs become permanent family members,” she stated.

Future Initiatives

The association is currently negotiating partnerships with veterinary clinics to provide low-cost medications, benefiting both rescuers and low-income residents who struggle to afford pet care.
