Ancient Maya Ritual Revived in Yucatan Community to Honor Earth Deities

Participants gather around an altar during a traditional Maya ritual at the K'aan K'aan Che'e cenote in Homún, Yucatan

Homún, Yucatan — The scent of cooked corn, smoke from a sacred fire, and prayers in the Maya language marked an uncommon scene for many but a deeply sacred one for others: in Homún, a Yucatan community has once again fed the earth deities.

Around the K’aan K’aan Che’e cenote, residents performed the ancient ceremony known as J’etz Lu’um, a millennia-old ritual that seeks to restore balance between humans and nature while also asking for protection for this sacred site.

Early in the morning, the x’men — a spiritual guide — prepared the altar and offerings. Among them stood out the s’aakáab, a corn-based drink that symbolizes food for the deities, along with traditional dishes collectively prepared by the community in an act that blends spirituality and fellowship.

The ritual also included preparing stews like k’ool and breads cooked underground, which were later blessed and offered to the so-called “guardians of the forest.” All of this responds to a worldview in which the earth is not merely inhabited but respected and nourished.

More than a ceremony, the experience became a cultural bridge: tourists from countries like Germany and Ireland observed and participated respectfully, surprised by a tradition that remains alive and connects the past with the present.

During the final act, the offerings — accompanied by candles and prayers — were placed on the altar while invoking the protective spirits of the place. Participants were even asked not to enter the cenote as a sign of respect toward the sacred entities.

After concluding, the food was shared among everyone, closing the ritual with a communal gesture that reflects one of the foundations of Maya culture: reciprocity with the earth.

This practice is not a spectacle or a recreation but a living expression of ancestral beliefs that, even today, maintain that the world’s balance depends on honoring those who, from the invisible realm, care for life.
