Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — Recurring power outages in Playa del Carmen and other parts of Quintana Roo are causing serious economic losses, according to the president of the Mexican Association of Business Women (AMEXME).
Valeria Rinderstma said the blackouts are not limited to residential neighborhoods and housing developments but also affect the tourist zone. She criticized the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) for failing to invest in additional substations.
The state-owned utility has kept on hold since March 2025 a project to build 10 substations and eight transmission lines, without launching a public tender. Rinderstma noted that the destination has continued to grow while energy infrastructure has not kept pace.
She said her organization is talking with various sectors of the public to raise awareness and pressure the federal government to address the problem. She insisted that CFE has not responded even though customers continue to pay their electricity bills.
Rinderstma also pointed to last weekend’s outage, which left the El Edén residential development without power for three days and triggered renewed street protests. She added that such outages have become almost a daily occurrence.
