Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — A judge has ordered the pretrial detention of Jesús "N," the alleged leader of a hitman squad tied to organized crime in Playa del Carmen, for his suspected involvement in a fatal shooting and an attempted homicide.
Charges Filed in Bar Shooting Case
In a statement issued Friday, July 4, the Quintana Roo State Prosecutor’s Office presented evidence linking Jesús "N" to a murder that occurred on June 3. Investigators allege the suspect entered a bar on 18th Street and 40th Avenue North in the Centro neighborhood, where he fired at least six shots at the victim, killing them on the spot.
Authorities suggest the motive stemmed from a dispute between rival criminal groups, as the victim reportedly refused to pay extortion fees, commonly referred to as "derecho de piso" (protection money).
Additional Attempted Homicide Charge
The suspect is also accused of involvement in a separate armed attack on June 11, which left a man and a woman injured at a restaurant where they worked.
The judge ruled that Jesús "N" will remain in preventive detention for two years or until the judicial process concludes. Investigations into his alleged participation in other violent crimes in the region are ongoing.
The case underscores ongoing security challenges in Playa del Carmen, where organized crime-related violence has drawn increased law enforcement scrutiny.
