PLAYA DEL CARMEN, Quintana Roo — Rain and wind did little to slow the crowd Wednesday night as thousands of residents and visitors filled the Feria del Carmen fairgrounds for a free concert by Mexican pop singer Aleks Syntek, one of the most anticipated performances of the 2026 fair.

The concert took place July 15 at the Recinto Ferial on Avenida CTM, where Syntek was scheduled as the final major pop headliner before the close of the weeklong celebration in honor of the Virgen del Carmen. Municipal promotion for the event listed the show as free admission, with the performance beginning at 9 p.m.

Mayor Estefanía Mercado said more than 20,000 people attended the concert, describing it as another sign of Playa del Carmen’s ability to host large, free public events for local families and visitors.

Syntek opened a career-spanning show for fans who have followed his music across several decades. The set included some of his best-known songs, including “Te Soñé,” “Duele el Amor,” “Sexo, Pudor y Lágrimas,” “Por Volverte a Ver” and “Intocable.” The crowd sang along through the rain as the singer moved through pop, electronic and dance arrangements.

For Playa del Carmen, the show was more than a concert. It was part of the municipality’s broader effort to position the Feria del Carmen as a free, family-friendly celebration that combines popular music, regional food, cultural activities and traditional religious observances. The city’s official tourism platform describes the fair as one of Playa del Carmen’s most traditional events, centered on honoring the city’s patron saint with amusement rides, regional dances and typical dishes.

This year, the municipality made free amusement rides one of the main attractions of the fair, a change Mayor Mercado promoted as a benefit for families during all seven days of the celebration. Local reports also noted that the 2026 program included concerts, cultural activities, food areas and events tied to the Virgen del Carmen.

Syntek’s appearance brought a different audience to the fairgrounds than some of the earlier shows. While Rich Mafia drew a younger urban music crowd and Grupo Mojado appealed to fans of romantic grupera music, Syntek’s catalog reached across generations, from longtime listeners who remember his early work with Aleks Syntek y la Gente Normal to younger fans familiar with his later pop hits.

The singer, whose full name is Raúl Alejandro Escajadillo Peña, is originally from Mérida, Yucatán, and has been active in music since the late 1980s. He has earned multiple Latin Grammy nominations and one Grammy nomination, and he remains one of the better-known figures in Mexican pop and rock en español. The official Latin Grammy site lists him with 10 Latin Grammy nominations through the 26th annual awards cycle.

His current Total Syntek Tour has also been promoted as a 35th-anniversary tour, marking more than three decades of recording and performing. His official site lists the tour’s Auditorio Nacional date in Mexico City under that anniversary theme.

The Feria del Carmen 2026 opened July 10 and runs through July 16. Its main concert program included Rich Mafia, Grupo Mojado, Cachirula and Loojan, and Aleks Syntek, with shows scheduled at the fairgrounds alongside free rides and gastronomic and recreational activities.

The celebration closes Thursday with its most traditional element: religious observances in honor of the Virgen del Carmen, the patron saint for whom Playa del Carmen is named. The closing program includes a solemn Mass at Plaza 28 de Julio, bringing the fair back to its roots as both a civic celebration and a patron saint festival.

After several nights of large crowds, free concerts and packed fairgrounds, Syntek’s rain-soaked performance became one of the defining images of this year’s celebration: thousands of people standing together in the weather, singing familiar songs in the middle of Playa del Carmen’s biggest annual tradition.
