Akumal Thrives in Low Season Thanks to Teamwork

Tulum, Quintana Roo — Unlike other tourist hubs in the Mexican Caribbean, Akumal has not experienced a significant downturn in visitor numbers during the traditionally slow season, according to local tourism service providers.

Teamwork and Cleanup Efforts Sustain Tourism

Manuel Jiménez, manager of the water activities shop H2O Adventures, attributed the sustained tourism activity to coordinated efforts among service providers, hotel operators, and the National Commission of Natural Protected Areas (Conanp). Daily cleanup operations to remove sargassum from the bay have been critical in maintaining the area’s appeal.

“The difference here is teamwork. As soon as dawn breaks, crews are already removing sargassum. This keeps our waters clean and attractive for tourism,” Jiménez said.

Repeat Visitors Bolster Akumal’s Appeal

Another advantage for Akumal, Jiménez noted, is the prevalence of repeat visitors—tourists familiar with the destination who return specifically for activities such as snorkeling and swimming with turtles. This trend contrasts with other areas of the state, where sargassum buildup has negatively impacted beach aesthetics and hotel occupancy rates.

“Thanks to all this, Akumal remains a competitive destination, even during challenging tourism seasons for the region,” Jiménez added.

The article originally included links to related stories, such as a proposal by a Quintana Roo senator to allocate 25% of tourism sector revenue to address sargassum influx and Tulum restaurants earning the most mentions in the 2025 Michelin Guide. However, these were presented as supplementary references rather than part of the main report.
