The government, led by Ana Paty Peralta, has successfully protected 656,830 turtle eggs during the current nesting season, which spans from May to November. This figure represents the safeguarding of 4,571 nests belonging to white, loggerhead, hawksbill, and leatherback turtle species. These nests are spread across 54 designated areas along the 12-kilometer stretch of Cancun's coastline.
Peralta emphasized that the City Council has been actively involved in protecting these creatures since the first sea turtle was spotted on the sandbanks in early May. The council's efforts include conducting tours, monitoring activities, educational talks, and ongoing training to ensure the turtles' successful reproduction.
Collaborating with the hotel industry and volunteers, they have successfully managed to release 77,376 hatchlings into the wild. Tania Fernández, the head of Ecology, reported that out of the 35,000 eggs that were secured after Hurricane Beryl, over half have successfully hatched and been released.
