QUINTANA ROO, Mexico — The Secretariat of Public Education (SEP) has implemented several changes to the 2025-2026 School Calendar for the state of Quintana Roo. These adjustments come after teachers protested for several months, leading to the suspension of classes across the entity.
All basic-level students in Quintana Roo are scheduled to return to classrooms on Monday, September 1, following a two-month summer vacation. This year, the break included an additional week of rest due to changes in the labor rights for SEP workers.
This modification was prompted after teachers in Quintana Roo and across the country mounted protests against the 2007 ISSSTE Law. The teachers argue that this law has left them without pensions and established a minimum retirement age that is now being considered for a freeze in order to benefit them.
Teachers Reject Proposed Salary Sanctions
On Thursday, August 28, the Comité Central de Lucha de Quintana Roo, a movement representing the majority of teachers in the state, published a statement on its social media channels. In it, the group affirmed it would reject "any sanction" imposed on teachers who participated in marches and sit-ins.
The statement was issued in response to reports that some participating teachers would face salary cuts as a penalty. The Comité has requested a meeting with the Secretariat of Education of Quintana Roo (SEQ) to reach an agreement.
