Tulum Transport Union Joins Jaguar Park Protest

Tulum, Mexico — The National Union of Transporters of Change (UNTRAC), Section 2, has announced it will join a protest scheduled for August 31 against the economic and social damages allegedly caused by the Jaguar Park in Tulum.

Moisés Pool Quijano, the union's general secretary for the region, stated that transport workers are part of the community and are directly facing the negative impact on tourism, which affects the demand for their services. "Tourism has diminished enormously compared to how it was before. When we transport visitors, their comments are very negative because of the high access costs and the multiple checkpoints they must go through. This affects all of us as service providers," he emphasized.

The union leader affirmed that the syndicate's position is clear: to support peaceful demonstrations to demand the federal government listen to the voices of the various local sectors. "UNTRAC is fully united. If there is to be a march or a street blockade, we will be there, peacefully, because together we can go further and show that we do not agree with what was imposed by the federal government," he said.

He underscored that the grievances are not exclusive to one group but extend to transport workers, merchants, artisans, fishing cooperatives, and the general public. He explained that even visitors from municipalities with high poverty rates, such as Felipe Carrillo Puerto, face higher fees than residents of Tulum, an act he described as discriminatory.

With this announcement, the transport union joins a coalition of civil organizations, business owners, vendors, and service providers seeking to highlight the problems stemming from the Jaguar Park's operational model. They accuse the park of excluding the local community from tourism benefits and making the visitor experience more expensive.

The protest scheduled for August 31 plans to block the main entrances to the archaeological zone in an effort to draw the attention of authorities and demand a review of the park's current conditions.
