Yucatán Fishermen Sell Safety Gear Meant to Save Lives

Yucatán, Mexico — Less than 15 days after the distribution of life jackets and marine radios to fishermen for their safety, reports have emerged that some recipients are selling the equipment. Yucatán Governor Joaquín Díaz Mena expressed disappointment over the incidents, emphasizing that the gear was provided free of charge to protect workers at sea.

Safety Initiative Follows Hurricane Disappearances

The "Safety at Sea" program, launched on June 20, aims to prevent tragedies like those during the 2024 hurricane season, when fishermen went missing off the coasts of Celestún and Progreso. The state government distributed over 13,000 life jackets and 3,500 marine radios to safeguard those in the fishing industry.

Governor Díaz Mena announced the initiative in Celestún, stating, "The Government of the Maya Renaissance seeks to reinforce safety at sea and provide dignified conditions for those who dedicate themselves daily to fishing."

Governor’s Appeal to Fishermen

In a social media post, Díaz Mena urged fishermen to use the equipment rather than sell it.

"I want to appeal to all fishermen benefiting from this program—it is completely free. Do not sell these items; they are for your safety," he said. "In the event of a storm or hurricane at sea, a life jacket could mean the difference between life and death, and a radio could help report your location if lost."

He added, "We are doing our part as a government by providing these tools, but you must also do yours by wearing the life jackets when fishing."

Criticism of Equipment Sales

The governor condemned the sale of the safety gear, which undermines the program’s purpose. During Hurricane Milton in October 2024, several vessels failed to reach safe harbor, prompting extensive but largely unsuccessful search efforts.

The equipment distribution is part of broader efforts to enhance maritime safety and support Yucatán’s fishing communities. Authorities continue to monitor compliance to ensure the gear is used as intended.
