Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — A violent armed attack shook Avenida Kantenah early yesterday morning when gunmen opened fire multiple times at the restaurant-bar "Las Helodias," leaving several injured and the community alarmed by the surge of violence in the municipality.
Chaos and Injuries Reported
The incident occurred around 2:30 a.m., when emergency services received multiple calls urgently requesting police and medical assistance near the former Punto 115, where gunshots were reported inside the establishment.
According to preliminary unofficial reports, the attack may be linked to alleged extortion attempts by criminal groups operating in the region. During the assault, at least two people were injured: a man with gunshot wounds, who reportedly fled before emergency responders arrived, and a woman who suffered a fractured ankle after being knocked down in the panic caused by the gunfire.
Temporary Closure and Community Outcry
In a brief statement posted on social media, the bar’s management announced a temporary closure "until further notice," citing the need for improved security conditions in the area. They expressed solidarity with the victims and called on authorities to ensure safety for businesses to operate.
Despite the severity of the incident, no official statement had been issued by municipal or state authorities by the time this article was published. The lack of information has sparked frustration among residents and visitors, who are demanding greater transparency and action amid rising violence.
Context of Rising Violence
The closure of "Las Helodias" adds to a growing list of businesses forced to shut down due to crime and extortion, threatening the local economy. The attack comes just days after the Secretary of Public Security reported a significant reduction in crime rates for the week of May 19–26, including the seizure of 678 packages of suspected narcotics, 30 arrests, and the confiscation of two firearms, magazines, and ammunition.
Authorities have yet to comment on whether the recent attack is connected to broader criminal activity in the region.
