Isla Mujeres, Quintana Roo — The Mayor of Isla Mujeres, Atenea Gómez Ricalde, presided over the traditional Captains' Dinner, officially marking the start of activities for the 20th International Fishing Tournament "Cosme Alberto Martínez Magaña." Recognized as one of the most prestigious competitions in the Mexican Caribbean, the tournament is renowned for offering one of the largest prize pools.
The Captains' Dinner once again served as the social and ceremonial heart of the event, where official participation kits and wristbands were distributed, and registrations were formally closed.
A Gathering of Participants and Authorities
Held on Friday evening, the event brought together captains, crew members, state and federal authorities, sponsors, and members of the local community. The dinner symbolically launched this internationally acclaimed competition.
In her remarks, Mayor Atenea Gómez emphasized the tournament's significance as both an economic driver for the island and a tradition that unites the community, strengthens local identity, and showcases Isla Mujeres globally.
"Today, we reaffirm our commitment to sustainable tourism development and events that promote healthy competition, respect for the sea, and family camaraderie. This tournament reflects who we are—hardworking, hospitable people proud of our roots," she stated.
Commitment to Sports Tourism and Local Development
The island's mayor also reiterated her administration's dedication to promoting sports tourism as a catalyst for economic and social growth, in collaboration with the fishing and business sectors.
She confirmed that this year's tournament has already registered over 90 vessels, a figure that underscores the event's credibility and prestige built over two decades.
During the ceremony, Mayor Gómez presented a recognition to the family of Cosme Alberto Martínez Magaña, which was received by Tony Martínez.
