Workers loading debris into a truck in a cleanup effort

Isla Mujeres, Quintana Roo — The municipal government of Isla Mujeres, led by Mayor Atenea Gómez, has completed a cleanup operation at the Central Cemetery, removing over 20 tons of debris. The effort, carried out by the Directorate of Government in collaboration with the General Directorate of Public Services, began in October 2023 and concluded this month.

Restoration and Community Call to Action

Dubé Delgado, Director of Government, announced that in addition to the debris removal, workers repaired the cemetery’s entrance gate, which had sustained damage due to weather conditions. Delgado urged residents to adhere to the Cemetery Regulations, prominently displayed at the entrance, which require visitors to dispose of waste properly after cleaning and maintaining graves. The rules also mandate the immediate removal of debris generated during the construction of burial vaults, crypts, and monuments.

“Following the instructions of our Mayor, we have cleaned the Central Cemetery by removing all the debris that families of the deceased had accumulated over the years. Now, it is everyone’s responsibility to care for this sacred ground,” Delgado stated.

Authorities emphasized the importance of maintaining the cemetery’s cleanliness and order, calling on the island community to cooperate in preserving the site.

Photographs provided by the Isla Mujeres City Council documented the cleanup efforts.
