Cancún, Quintana Roo — Under the directive of Municipal President Ana Paty Peralta, the Benito Juárez City Council, through its Ecology Department, has launched the 2025 season of the Municipal Sea Turtle Protection Program. The initiative involves collaboration from various social sectors to safeguard the marine reptiles that nest along the coastline.

A Collaborative Effort for Conservation

Representing the municipal government, Ecology Director Fernando Haro Salinas expressed gratitude to hoteliers, lodging staff, municipal, state, and federal agencies, academic institutions, civil associations, and citizens for their participation in protecting the turtles.

"Today, with the start of the new 2025 season, we reaffirm the commitment of our Municipal President to intensify efforts because every action counts. Protecting turtles means protecting our beaches, our ecosystems, and the identity that unites us," Haro Salinas stated.

Record-Breaking Achievements in 2024

The official highlighted the program’s accomplishments in 2024, including the protection of 7,450 nests across 54 enclosures, the safeguarding of 980,416 eggs, and the release of 954,126 hatchlings from three different turtle species. These results were achieved through more than 600 day and night patrols.

Haro Salinas emphasized that sea turtles are not only a protected species but also a symbol of hope and continuity. Their annual return to the municipality’s shores indicates the success of conservation efforts, reflecting healthy ecosystems and clean beaches.

Participation of Private Sector and Monitoring Efforts

As part of the event, nesting results from Palace Resort, Hard Rock Hotel Cancún, and the Master Plan of the Americas were presented. Additionally, the State Sea Turtle Committee reported on strandings and turtle arrivals along the coast.

The program underscores the municipality’s dedication to environmental preservation and the sustainable coexistence of tourism and wildlife in Quintana Roo.
