Cozumel, Mexico — The island of Cozumel welcomed the Utopia of the Seas, the world’s second-largest cruise ship, with enthusiasm, marking another milestone in the cruise tourism history of the "Island of the Swallows." The imposing vessel docked at the SSA México terminal, one of the most modern and high-capacity facilities in the country.

A Floating Marvel of Luxury and Entertainment

With a capacity for over 7,000 passengers and nearly 2,300 crew members, the Utopia of the Seas offers an unparalleled onboard experience. The ship features more than 40 dining options, world-class entertainment, surf simulators, zip lines, a water park, an aquatic theater, and an entire neighborhood with a Caribbean theme.

Originating from Port Canaveral, Florida, USA, the Utopia of the Seas sails under the Bahamian flag as part of Royal Caribbean International’s renowned Oasis class. The majestic vessel was inaugurated in July 2024 and represents the latest in maritime innovation, technology, and entertainment.

Strengthening Cozumel’s Cruise Tourism Status

The arrival of the Utopia of the Seas solidifies Cozumel’s position as one of the Caribbean’s most important cruise ports, generating significant economic benefits and promoting sustainable development for the destination. Local port and tourism authorities welcomed the crew and visitors, highlighting the island’s hospitality and natural beauty.

During a formal ceremony, the Director General of the Quintana Roo Port Authority (APIQROO), Vagner Elbiorn Vega, representing Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa, presented commemorative plaques to the ship’s captain, Ángel Oviol Ruiz, as a symbol of welcome. Elbiorn emphasized the importance of this arrival for strengthening tourism in the region.

In his remarks, Vagner Elbiorn stated that the Utopia of the Seas reinforces Cozumel’s status as a key destination in global cruise routes, boosting the local economy and creating new opportunities for Quintana Roo families.

This event aligns with the state government’s vision of transformation, led by Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa, through a "New Era of Tourism" based on social justice and shared prosperity, where tourism growth translates into tangible well-being for all.
