Maurizio Spinosi Hellies, an Italian national, is wanted by authorities for the alleged rape of his five-year-old daughter. The State General Prosecutor's Office has offered a reward of 300,000 pesos for information leading to his arrest. This announcement was made on June 4th, following a specific agreement 5/2024.
Hellies has been on the run since May 10th when an arrest warrant was issued against him. This came after the collective “Madres Buscadoras de Quintana Roo” staged a protest in the Hotel Zone at the entrance to Puerto Cancún, demanding his arrest for incidents that took place in August of the previous year.
The child's mother, Melissa, who is of Colombian origin, claimed that Hellies had been granted “complete impunity”. She alleged that the public prosecutor in the case had provided him with numerous procedural advantages, allowing him to build his case with various appeals and proceedings. Meanwhile, she and her lawyer were not permitted to review the case file.
The public prosecutor failed to include a coroner's report confirming the rape in the case file. As a result, the judge did not find merit in the mother's accusations and granted custody of the child to Hellies, who is now a fugitive.
After a sit-in protest outside the Prosecutor's Office, Melissa was finally granted access to the case files. Authorities also rescued the child and returned her to her mother.
On the same day the arrest warrant was issued, the protest was partially lifted. However, the collective vowed to continue blockades on Nichupté Avenue until Hellies is arrested and the Sex Crimes Prosecutor, Nathaly Robertos, is removed from her post.
The issuance of the reward by the State General Prosecutor's Office lends credibility to the victim's accusations and suggests negligence on the part of the prosecuting attorney.
