Mérida, Yucatán — Yucatán will host 51 simultaneous wedding ceremonies across 20 municipalities this Valentine’s Day, featuring three same-sex couples and a French national among the diverse participants.
The weddings are part of a state government program through the Legal Counsel and State Civil Registry (Recey) designed to provide legal certainty for families through accessible procedures.
Among those marrying are 15 Mayan speakers and 19 divorced individuals who have decided to rebuild their lives with new partners, reflecting the variety of stories converging on this day.
According to Recey director Jorge Carlos Ramírez Granados, the ceremonies will span different age ranges: the oldest couple will marry in Valladolid with partners aged 70 and 64, while the youngest will formalize their union in Umán, both aged 18.
Mérida will host the largest number of weddings with 27 ceremonies, followed by Valladolid with three. Other municipalities hosting weddings include Acanceh, Celestún, Chemax, Chichimilá, Chikindzonot, Conkal, Homún, Hunucmá, Izamal, Kinchil, Motul, Oxkutzcab, Santa Elena, Tekax, Tekit, Telchac Puerto, and Tinum.
Legal counsel Gaspar Alemañy Ortiz stated that these actions aim to strengthen legal certainty and guarantee the right to identity and family life through accessible procedures and direct attention to citizens.
