Cancún, Quintana Roo — A woman was fatally shot Tuesday evening outside her apartment in Cancún’s Prado Norte neighborhood during an apparent robbery attempt, with one suspect detained near the scene.
The shooting occurred around 7 p.m. on Privada Machiche, near the intersection with Avenida Flor de Mayo, close to the campus of the Autonomous University of Quintana Roo (UQROO).
According to initial reports, the victim was shot in the back after being confronted by assailants who apparently intended to rob her. The woman reportedly resisted, prompting one of the attackers to shoot her.
The assailants fled after the attack, but one was detained in the vicinity of the crime scene.
Municipal police officers and Mexican Army personnel responded to the location and cordoned off the area. State Prosecutor’s Office agents processed the scene, recovering the woman’s body and transporting it to the forensic medical service.
Neighbors in the area reported that robberies have increased in this part of the neighborhood in recent months. They noted that just last weekend, another woman was injured in a robbery on the same street after being struck with a blunt object.
